Community Discussions – Open

This has been a long time coming, but some of our community is having an ‘open’, well semi-open, discussion about Torah and the Land of Canaan.

No Rewards

I sometimes ask myself why I believe Torah.聽 Why do I desire to serve Almighty?

Continually, I get knocked off my feet with discovered errors.

Always, it’s a lonely traipse through time.

The end of the matter – I have absolutely no skin in the game.聽聽There is zero lineage in my family line that ties to the People of the Book.聽聽I am listed on a family pedigree, part of a registered family history, that extends back to the 1500s, of European descent and documented immigration to the colonies in 1629.聽 I am European American.聽 Or hillbilly, in tribute to my dead mother.

There is absolutely nothing I gain by my desire to serve Almighty, except that I soothe my own soul.

I’m ostracized in some circles for staunchly defending my integrity.聽 My blood family steers a wide berth around me since they don’t understand me — that or they attempt to proselytize me.聽 My spouse thankfully tolerates and accommodates me, but disagrees with my beliefs, so聽I will not be a citizen in the land YHWH calls Israel, unless by means beyond my control.聽 Should I find myself there, I would have to beg for scraps, scrape by and feed off the corners, hope to become a servant to survive.聽 I have no inheritance.

You see, I am nobody.聽 I have no reward for what I believe.

What I have is a deep belief that what YHWH has set down in Torah is the most perfect system I could ever imagine.聽 I am a follower of rules, a cynic who tests but a guardian once I am convinced.聽 I could keep the instructions, I believe, should I be in the position to be in the land.聽 But what if I’m wrong?聽 If I don’t keep the Law in the Land, I would be expelled or killed.

Harsh?聽 Or perfect?

Either way – there’s no reward.聽 Yet, I will continue.

Hebrew Shema: Hear Oh Scattered of Israel!

We can point to this, that, or the other as prophecy – and even look at old text and say that it was prophesied and came true – not knowing for certain when it was written.聽 But Torah gives us concrete instructions for what a messed up and lost nation Jacob would become.

We can look at irrigated fields, with neighboring bodies of water sucked dry and call them miraculous signs of blessings;聽 we can tout technological savvy and military prowess, backed by other nations not familiar to our ancients, as preordained and call them proof of biblical texts.聽 But we ignore what Almighty pictured in Torah as our proof of being in sync with Almighty:

3聽If ye walk in My statutes, and keep My commandments, and do them;聽4聽then I will give your rains in their season, and the land shall yield her produce, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit.聽5聽And your threshing shall reach unto the vintage, and the vintage shall reach unto the sowing time; and ye shall eat your bread until ye have enough, and dwell in your land safely.聽6聽And I will give peace in the land, and ye shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid; and I will cause evil beasts to cease out of the land, neither shall the sword go through your land.聽7聽And ye shall chase your enemies, and they shall fall before you by the sword.聽8聽And five of you shall chase a hundred, and a hundred of you shall chase ten thousand; and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword.聽9聽And I will have respect unto you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you; and will establish My covenant with you.聽10聽And ye shall eat old store long kept, and ye shall bring forth the old from before the new.聽11聽And I will set My tabernacle (Not Temple) among you, and My soul shall not abhor you.聽12聽And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be My people.聽13聽I am the LORD your God, who brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, that ye should not be their bondmen; and I have broken the bars of your yoke, and made you go upright.

We cannot seem to look at Torah and take it seriously, literally –聽 have we not acknowledged that we CONTINUE to WALK AGAINST OUR ALMIGHTY?

Contrary to what two of the major religions claim, Torah shows us the truth about today and the Covenant with the tribe of Israel:

Leviticus 26

The critical piece is as follows – I will make the text red and put notes in parenthesis and in blue text for what I am calling attention to:

32聽And I will bring the land into desolation; and your enemies that dwell therein shall be astonished at it.聽 (desolation is ‘without Israel’ but not unoccupied, as the enemies are dwelling there)聽 聽33聽And you will I scatter among the nations, and I will draw out the sword after you; and your land shall be a desolation, and your cities shall be a waste.聽34Then shall the land be paid her sabbaths, as long as it lieth desolate, and ye are in your enemies’ land; even then shall the land rest, and repay her sabbaths.聽35聽As long as it lieth desolate it shall have rest; even the rest which it had not in your sabbaths, when ye dwelt upon it.聽36聽And as for them that are left of you, I will send a faintness into their heart in the lands of their enemies; and the sound of a driven leaf shall chase them; and they shall flee, as one fleeth from the sword; and they shall fall when none pursueth.聽37聽And they shall stumble one upon another, as it were before the sword, when none pursueth; and ye shall have no power to stand before your enemies.聽38And ye shall perish among the nations, and the land of your enemies shall eat you up.聽39聽And they that are left of you shall pine away in their iniquity in your enemies’ lands; and also in the iniquities of their fathers shall they pine away with them.40聽And they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, in their treachery which they committed against Me, and also that they have walked contrary unto Me.聽41聽I also will walk contrary unto them, and bring them into the land of their enemies; if then perchance their uncircumcised heart be humbled, and they then be paid the punishment of their iniquity;聽42then will I remember My covenant with Jacob, and also My covenant with Isaac, and also My covenant with Abraham will I remember; and I will remember the land.聽43聽For the land shall lie forsaken without them, and shall be paid her sabbaths, while she lieth desolate without them; and they shall be paid the punishment of their iniquity; because, even because they rejected Mine ordinances, and their soul abhorred My statutes.聽44聽And yet for all that, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not reject them, neither will I abhor them, to destroy them utterly, and to break My covenant with them; for I am the LORD their God.聽45But I will for their sakes remember the covenant of their ancestors, whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations, that I might be their God: I am the LORD.聽46聽These are the statutes and ordinances and laws, which the LORD made between Him and the children of Israel in mount Sinai by the hand of Moses.

So – Israel, Jacob, Hebrews –聽 I beseech you – confess that your course is off kilter and that you are no longer in concert with the Covenant, no longer doing your part in keeping The Law.

May YHWH Remember.聽 And may there be people left alive To Hear, and To Do.聽 And may The Land be once again the Joy of YHWH, Eternal.

Sh’ma Yisra’eil: Return to the Law

altar rock color

Sh’ma Yisra’eil – Return to the Law.

Torah Law, that is… the religion of the Hebrews.

I can keep it, it’s not terrifically hard, but it doesn’t matter.

Outside the land –聽It doesn’t matter.

I can live my life restrained only by civil law – eat, drink and be merry. 聽An ocean away, across the border, on the moon… as long as I’m not in the land chosen by Almighty, the Law is not a matter to much concern me.

So why am I so morose, so concerned with doing what YHVH commanded? 聽What keeps me on course, holding the line, standing apart and keeping separate from everyone and everything I know? 聽Why do I not just blend in, become a comfortable fit with society, with culture, with family and friends and community?

If nothing else, so that I can sleep well at night, so that I can practice what I believe with all of my heart. 聽Even if my obedience makes no difference, none. 聽Inconsequential, insignificant. 聽Important only to me. 聽Important only that by extension, I hope to revere YHVH by keeping the commands.

Truly, YHVH said I will bless them that bless you and curse them that curse you – by you all of the families of the earth will be blessed.

Not me. 聽Almighty didn’t say that about me.

Not anyone outside the land. 聽Other nations didn’t get this condition, this special selection.

Only Israel. 聽Chosen resident of the land.

So hey there Israel – Are you listening?!? – people in the land, citizens, strangers, residents of all shapes, sizes and beliefs – do you not believe YHVH?

Are you fearless, thinking Almighty, YHVH will not require?聽 See Numbers 35.

The land is chosen, deliberately; forever claimed by YHVH – a possession only lent to others as punishment to those peoples who defiled it, those who denied that YHVH owned the land.

Israel – pay attention before you also are spewed from the land! 聽Please!

There are terms. 聽There are conditions. 聽Go back and search for the God of your father Abraham. 聽Look to the ancients, those Hebrews who came out of Egypt to serve your Almighty, and repair your ways. 聽Strip your extraneous laws and traditions and return to YHVH who chose you 聽– to be the blessing, to dwell safely in the land, to become the rightful servants of YHVH.

Serious Contemplations

Conflict always exists.

Like it or not, there will be someone or something that irks you, catapults you into a frenzy, or becomes a bur under your saddle.

Fact of life.

This Middle East conflict however, has me deep in thought. 聽It’s been going on for centuries, making it more notable than the US story of the Hatfields and McCoys.

Is it justifiable?

I ponder how offensive it might be to Almighty.

Consider – A chosen people screw up, monumentally. 聽So significant is their error that they are tossed out of the Promised Land.

For Iniquity, mind you. 聽Their iniquities were so great that they were thrust from their promised blessings – conditional blessings, for any paying attention.

I’d always considered iniquity to be one of the many terms for sin, vileness, evil. 聽They’d gone against YHVH was my final determination.

However, the definition of iniquity gives me pause: 聽‘Immoral or Grossly Unfair Behavior’. 聽 A close cousin of iniquity, the word inequity also gives clarity: 聽‘Lack Of Fairness Or Justice’.

Oh my! 聽The nation of Israel, the nation of Judah, the people who were once Hebrews, united and chosen, were deemed UNFAIR.

Who deserves to live in the land, I ask?

What people would deny the holocaust as retribution for iniquities?

How could technology serve as a replacement for God?

I shake my head and wonder how it all became so fucked up…

I wonder also, how close are the ties between those in conflict. 聽Abraham had more than one child and the first land promise included all of his children.

Serious contemplations, indeed.
